One of the main components of Paine’s argument was that if England was the mother of the colonies, how could a mother treat her â€Å"child† that way – disproportionate taxes, military rule and unfair management.   Britain ruled the colonies in the best interest of Britain instead of what was best for the colonies.   The crux of Paine’s argument was that England was too far away to properly govern the colonies and treated them unfairly. Common Sense was pushing for pure democracy where every American would have a voice. Paine wrote Common Sense after the American Revolution had started and the second Continental Congress had convened to discuss independence.   Called together in May of 1775, and after a year of debate, in May of 1776, Congress had persuaded each colony to approve a proclamation of independence.   The attendees of the Continental Congress were appointed by their respective governments and were highly respected in their field. After Congress passed a resolution and requested that each representative obtain permission from their parent colony to approve a declaration of independence, John Adams wrote a more radical preamble to the declaration, which was adopted on May 15, around the same time that the letters were written.   It was the same day that Virginia brought forth a motion for a Declaration of Independence. While the American Revolution wanted their own rights and was working toward democracy, but it was a limited democracy as the forefathers held a fear of the common man. Both of these events inspired the letters written by John and Abigail Adams in the spring of 1776.   As Abigail implores John to â€Å"Remember the Ladies† and asks him to ensure that men are not given the same power over women that they held before.   This is similar to the colonies’ desire to break away from their mother country and the dominance of the king.   Men were tyrants to women as the king was a tyrant to the colonies. Abigail threatens a women’s rebellion to which John replies that America’s revolution has inspired many groups to rebel, but that is nothing compared to the possible uprising of women. John’s amused response is also similar to how the king responded to America’s rebellion.   John never believed that woman’s rights would prevail just as the king thought the revolution was laughable and would be quickly squelched. While Common Sense pushed for pure democracy, Adams was not inclined to agree with him.   In John Adams’ letter to James Sullivan, Adams speaks of the method of determining the vote, rejecting Sullivan’s idea of using wealth as a means of deciding who is permitted to vote.   Adams rebukes him, stating that this method would be too difficult; however, he held that opening the vote to everyone would be dangerous, unleashing the fickle whims of the â€Å"mob.†Ã‚   Adams believed there had to be some limits to who could vote and that â€Å"every man who has not a farthing, will demand an equal voice with any other.†

A national Government for instance, may choose to concentrate on defence plans and forgo other areas such as education. Although this satisfies the immediate wants, in the future it may lead to low economic activity, affecting the entire nation. Governments often find this a problem when trying to be more popular with voters (the individual consumer). The Government has the largest influence on the economy; therefore careful consideration must take place when making choices in response to the economic problem. Although individuals, businesses and governments all come across the economic problem in different ways, the only way to deal with it is resource allocation: choosing what to spend the limited resources in order to gain maximum satisfaction. This is often organised as a budget, whether within a household or the Governments National Budget for the year. However this is only a way of dealing with the problem, it does not solve it. As the wants of consumers are unlimited and ever changing, they can never be satisfied with the limited resources of the consumer or group. A budget simply aims to make the best choices, taking the wants and resources into account.

Trapped in a Fortune-Cookie Factory with no Stories to Tell Drawing on a distinction between 'primary' and 'secondary' experience derived from J. J. Gibson's ecological psychology, Edward S. Reed argues that our 'psychosocial ills' result from rampant 'degradation of opportunities for primary experience.' That Reed slides easily from 'experience' to 'information' is less due to Gibson's psychology than to the spirit of the time in which he writes: it is a truism that we live in an age of information, where every experience is an act of communication. But, as Reed notes, progress in information technology has been matched by regress in communication. We spend billions on a 'superhighway' that carries every kind of information except the ecological information 'that allows us to experience things for ourselves.' In a pattern familiar from cities shaped by automobiles, the line of this highway traces a virtually impermeable wall. While (sometimes) increasing access to 'processed' information, it (almost always) decreases access to 'ecological' i nformation. This is a 'pedagogical' as well as a 'perceptual' problem; my intent in this paper is to pose the problem clearly as a first step toward addressing it adequately. Reed illustrates the condition of ordinary people in contemporary society by calling to mind an old joke "about a person trapped in a fortune-cookie factory whose only hope for escape is to send out messages inside the cookies." (2)Like most jokes, this one depends on an instantly recognizable account of human experience. Its theme permeates the work of two great twentieth century writers—Samuel Beckett and Franz Kafka—whose names are routinely transformed into adjectives to describe the human condition at the end of the century. Reed finds it disconcerting "that the image conveyed by this joke—stripped of any pretense at humor—is nowadays often used to describe our lives." (3)That neither Beckett nor Kafka abandoned humor—both deepened the humor of this joke until it became inescapably bleak—is a point to which I will return later when I move from Reed's diagnosis to his prescr iption. But first the diagnosis. Reed's argument is laid out with admirable clarity in his prologue, "A Plea for Experience": "the psychosocial ills that beset many of us today—what historian Eric Hobsbawm calls the increasing barbarism of daily life—stem largely from the degradation of opportunities for primary experience that is rampant in all developed and developing societies.
